Asterton is a horse-racing betting game for 1 to 4 players. Players take on the role of bettors at a racetrack, trying to correctly predict which horses - Orange, Blue, Green, and Red - will cross the finish line in first, second, and third place in each race.
Each race unfolds in two phases. In the first, players secretly consult expert cards that reveal clues about each horse's form (combined with a publicly visible press card) and, in turn, place irrevocable bets, each choosing a different horse than the one just consulted by the previous player. Once betting closes, the experts' opinions are revealed and the horses advance through the first half of the track via dice rolls, with each horse's die determined by its accumulated form rating. In the second phase, players complete the rest of the track by playing Sprint cards to advance the horse of their choice (never the same horse just moved by another player), and can also choose to stand and keep unused cards for bonus points at the end of the race.
Once three horses cross the finish line, all players' bets are revealed and checked for accuracy: correctly predicting an exact position scores more than a "show" bet (predicting 1st or 2nd place either way), and exclusively predicting a position - one no other player also guessed - earns extra bonus points. Several races are played depending on the number of players, with cards and horse form reset between each race.
The player with the most points after all races have been completed wins the game, earned through successful bet predictions, exclusive-prediction bonuses, and points for unused Sprint cards. In the event of a tie, victory is shared.
