Trebuchet is a two-player abstract strategy game played on a hexagonal board. Each side controls five Stones, and the board’s twelve Men are shared. The objective: Use Men to sling your Stones across the board and destroy three of your opponent’s Stones before they destroy yours.
Each turn, a player takes one or two actions: Moving a Man or moving a Stone. A Man moves any number of empty spaces in a straight line and may not jump over other pieces. A Man’s ownership is determined by which side’s Stones are adjacent to it: if one player has an adjacent Stone, only they may move it; if both players have an adjacent Stone, no one may move it; if neither player has an adjacent Stone, both players may move it. A Stone moves in a straight line for a distance exactly equal to the number of Men currently adjacent to it, and may pass over other pieces en route to its destination. A player may not pass, and may not make a move that returns the board to a position already reached earlier in the same turn.
A Stone destroys an enemy Stone by moving directly onto the space it occupies; the Stone is removed from the board and scored. Because a Stone’s movement distance is entirely dependent on adjacent Men, the strategic tension lies in positioning Men to extend a Stone’s reach while limiting the opponent’s ability to do the same.
The game ends the moment either side has captured three of the opponent’s five Stones. If the same board position occurs three times over the course of play, the game ends in a draw instead.
