IMPEDIO is a two-player connection game played on a hexagonal board with five spaces per side. Each player controls thirty pieces, starting the game arranged in six stacks of five, one pair of stacks (one white, one black) on each side of the board.
On each turn, a player chooses one of their stacks containing more than one piece and splits it: some pieces stay behind at the original space, while the rest move away in a straight line along one of the six directions of the hex grid. The number of pieces left behind determines exactly how far the moving portion travels. A moving group may jump over any stack, friend or foe, and may either land on an empty space or merge with another stack of the same color; it cannot land on an enemy-occupied space.
A player wins by connecting a pair of opposite sides of the board, or three mutually non-adjacent sides, with a single connected group of their own stacks. A player with no legal move on their turn loses.
