The board consists of nine segments, arranged in a 3x3 grid, and each segment is also a 3x3 grid. This creates a 9x9 grid board. You take turns placing your pokemon on an empty space. The number of the space determines the segment in which your opponent must play next. To win, place three of your pokemons in a row.
