CV Captain: Into the Fire – Carrier Command, 1942 is a two-player historical wargame that places players in command of American and Japanese carrier air operations during the decisive carrier battles of 1942.
Each player commands an aircraft carrier or land air base and must manage the competing demands of search, strike preparation, aircraft movement, launch and recovery, combat air patrol, and defense. Players must locate the enemy, prepare and launch strikes, protect their own forces, and react to enemy attacks while working within the limitations of their flight decks, available aircraft, time, weather, and incomplete information.
CV Captain is historically grounded, but its primary focus is experiential rather than procedural accuracy. Historical carrier operations provide the foundation for the game, but many technical procedures are deliberately abstracted. Their effects and consequences remain while the mechanics required to reproduce them literally do not.
The emphasis is on the command decisions created by carrier warfare: When should you launch? How large a strike can you risk? How many fighters should remain behind for defense? Do you launch now with incomplete information or wait for a better contact report? Can you recover aircraft before an incoming enemy strike reaches you?
The goal is not simply to show how carrier warfare was conducted, but to give players a sense of what it might have felt like to be responsible for the decisions that determined its outcome.
