Battle of Balaclava. 25 October 1854 (1)
The first stage of the battle 6:00-12:00 - «The Thin Red Line».
The Russian detachment of General Liprandi, divided into 4 columns, had to capture the forward line of redoubts, which covered up the Allied naval base in Balaklava.
All defense of the partially unfinished redoubts was carried out by small Turkish detachments (approximately 1,500 soldiers) with a small number of artillery pieces taken from British ships.
During the first hour and a half, thanks to the overwhelming numerical superiority, the capture of the redoubts was brilliantly achieved by the Russians.
An attempt to develop a successful attack by General Ryzhov’s hussars was stopped by a counterattack by the British Heavy Brigade.
